The old procedure after an accident was to get three estimates at different shops, submit them to your insurance company, and let them tell you what they were willing to pay. You brought in the car, the work got done, shop got paid and you got your repaired vehicle back.

Today, it’s much more likely that your insurance company will want to inspect the vehicle first themselves and give you a list of their “approved” repair shops. While they will want you to take it to a shop on the list, the good news for you is that you are still free to choose whatever shop you desire!

Here are some tips to finding the right shop for you…

Before deciding on a repair shop, get to know the shops you’re considering. Research a few reviews, ask for recommendations from friends and coworkers.

If possible, have some shops give you quotes, then compare them. Also consider what other services may be offered, for example, a rental car right there, or a shuttle to drop you off or pick you up when work is completed. Sometimes, it’s the little things that can make a difference.
